Of all the foreign language Nancy Drew books, those in the "Alice Roy" series are by far the most popular and plentiful. Many have speculated as to why the French publishers chose to change Nancy's name so dramatically, but it is possibly because her name is difficult to pronounce in French. The French publisher, Hachette, apparently has an active marketing staff which has managed to produce an incredible array of format variations over the years. Alice Roy afficienado extraordinaire Seán Bourke has compiled a guide to Nancy Drew in French, which identifies 22 discernable "types" (wow!). Although I have consolidated some Seán's categories, I will still describe 14 French formats in this web site. Since Seán has already conducted such exhaustive research in this area, I will be drawing liberally on the information found in his guide, especially in regards to dates.
